Why all trainers aren't created equal

Posted On: July 21, 2008

As most of you have noticed when attending a fitness class, the gym or just going outside for a jog that Personal trainers and fitness instructors are everywhere. These people are all there to help others get fit and stay fit. Yet when you take a closer look, something doesn't seem 'quite right'.

As I was saying, they are everywhere and that is a great thing. It’s great because it encourages a greater number of people to get out there and keep fit.

Now what’s wrong then, you ask? It’s not so much wrong as it is not ‘quite right’. Being a Fitness Professional I believe that you have to project a certain image, the image of being fit, strong, healthy and athletically built.

Some trainers however, to put it kindly do not fit into that category. They are unfit, weak and unhealthy and it shows in their physique. Yet they are still out there and people still train with them. It’s strange but true!

I believe most trainers do project that image which is great. Some have had good genes which make it easy to maintain that image whilst others have had to work hard on maintaining it but never the less they do maintain it. These are good trainers because they ‘show’ what is possible through proper exercise and nutrition.

I know I sound like I’m attacking ‘those’ types that don’t fit the mold but I’m not. I am simply stating the facts, and the facts are that people are still going with trainers that don’t seem to practice what they preach!

Maybe it’s because they’re less intimidating or that they won’t ‘look as unfit’ standing next to them. Some I believe train with these trainers because they believe they won’t get ‘pushed’ as hard. (And you know, they are probably right!)

Like most people I believe in getting my money’s worth and when it comes to my health I don’t mind paying a little bit extra. So when I get a trainer I look at their physique as well as their resume because if they don’t look like they practice what they preach then I just don’t believe I’m getting my money’s worth, don’t you?
